For the complete renovation of this single-family home, we aimed to transform its closed-off character into a more open one. The different spaces were too isolated from each other, and the circulation could be more streamlined. A unique feature of the house is the presence of various half-levels or split levels, but their potential isn't fully realized in the current layout. By opening up the living spaces and visually connecting them, we enhance the quality of these split levels.
We propose a single, clear structural intervention running through the house from the front to the rear facade, addressing our key challenge. A row of evenly spaced concrete columns defines the "open" boundaries of the different spaces. These columns create a visual relationship between the various rooms and subtly guide the resident through the house.
By turning the placement of the concrete columns underneath the beam, they appear as more elegant and feel less heavy along the sightline they create throughout the building. The entrance, staircase, office space, living room, dining area, and kitchen are all interconnected by this structural intervention. The triangular kitchen island follows the shape of the turned concrete columns, subtly defining the kitchen space a bit more.
