Project Extension of a rowhouse
Location Meise
Client Private
Year 2022
Status Tender

The building to be expanded belongs to a group of houses with a similar monotonous brick architecture. It is a typical turnkey housing development of only six years old. The expanding family wishes to add a volume for extra bedroom space on top of the back extension. An excellent opportunity to transform this brick box into a home with more architectural identity.

We have decided to work with a wooden structure, which can be fully prepared in the workshop, making the house wind- and waterproof again within two to three weeks. The X-column structurally functions as a cross brace, keeping the entire roof structure straight and counteracting torsion. This allows the façade to be executed in glass along its entire length, emphasizing the opening windows and the 'X-column' as geometric figures.

At the bottom, the wooden beam of the portal frame has extra depth so that it can serve as a bench in the two rooms. Each functional element contributes to both the aesthetics on the inside as well as on the outside, which is important to us in the pursuit of making good architecture.
